Finding out what’s on today in Bizkaia means opening half a dozen websites: each venue’s own, the ticketing sites, whichever Instagram account. bizkaia:now pulls it together into a map with a time bar and filters, and every event links to its official page to book.
The original plan was to write scrapers for the nine big venues. Before starting I measured what already existed, and the Basque Government’s open events feed (Kulturklik) covered all nine, under an open licence and with a public API. The real gap was elsewhere: nightlife and mid-sized ticketing sites. Those do get their own sources, and one of them is Instagram flyers, which a vision model reads to pull out date, venue and time. That’s the only place a model comes in.
The hard part wasn’t getting the events, but knowing when two of them are the same. One concert arrives through three sources with different titles, the venue spelled two ways and the time in free text. Deterministic rules resolve it, with no model acting as judge, and every new rule is measured against a hand-labelled set: if precision or recall drops, it doesn’t go in.
